If you have ADHD then you know how hard it can be to keep an organized home. Life can often seem overwhelming and even completely unmanageable. Wile you may not be able to leave a totally free clutter free life, having a peaceful home that doesn’t overwhelm you the second you walk in to the room is very achievable.
An important thing to remember is that mess, especially ADAH mess isn’t as important as you think that it is. It is OK to have mess in your life. It doesn’t take away from who you are as a person and it doesn’t represent you. You are separate from your mess.
Also remember that nothing is forever and just because mess has been hard for you to manage in the past doesn’t mean that it can never be unmanageable.
Declutter Regularly
Decluttering a room or space regularly is so important to keep a clean and organized space. You can dedicate short sessions each week to sort through belongings and get rid of items you no longer need or use or you can go room by room. Getting rid of old or unused things that are taking up space will create more physical and mental space for you to thrive.
Use Timers and Alarms
Time management can be such a struggle with ADHD. Using timers or alarms can help you stay on track when organizing or cleaning your space. Setting a short timer before cleaning can really help make organizing a much more manageable task. You can use little pockets of time to clean up your space and help you clear things up without feeling overwhelmed.
Set Small Goals
Rather than starting off big and thinking of all the things that you have to get done and all the things that you need to organize start small. Instead of walking in to a room with a plan to de clutter and clean everything up, pick a small start point and work your way from there. You can start with something small, like a desk, or bed. When you pick something small to start off with, it can serve as motivation and make you feel accomplished because you can see visual progress. Starting small can also help keep you on track from distractions. When you start to do something else you can remember your goals and go back to what you were doing.
Establish Daily Routines
Establishing a daily routine can help a cluttered life become more predictable. You can set aside time each day to do specific tasks. You can even make a chart or checklist on things to get done each day. It can be narrowed down by room to really create a detailed chart of all the things you need to accomplish in a day.
